Barbie & Kelly Fun Treats Dolls (2001)

Cheap Barbie & Kelly Fun Treats Dolls (2001) Review

I have to say I think other reviewers are being a bit brutal about this toy. My secret -- lowered expectations! I fully expected this to be messy, and considering how sugary sweet the "cakes" are, I don't half mind that there are no refills available.

You get two dolls: pig-tailed Barbie with bendable legs and articulated arms, wearing an apron, and pony-tailed Kelly, sitting on a kitchen stool, ready to watch the baking. The stove/oven is a fairly clever setup. Using included bowl, measuring cup and spoon, you mix up a batch of strawberry icing, pour it into one stovetop "pan" and watch it descend into the cake pan in the oven; slide the pan to the other side of the oven using a lever on the back; dispense confetti decorations from a second stovetop pan; remove the pan and add sprinkles. Yum. Drinkable strawberry icing with sprinkles!

Aside: If Mattel had refills, you'd have to make monthly visits to the dentist, so count your blessings! Also, it's really easy to mix up something similar on your own -- put some powdered sugar and water together with a drop of food coloring. Learned helplessness, anyone? Show your kids how resilient and resourceful you are (and they can be)!

Anyway, apart from the "cooking", the stove is a bit nifty and the two dolls are cute. I'd like to give negative stars for educational value since an oven and stove don't really interact and Barbie's physique is so totally bizarre, but otherwise, lighten up -- it's pretty fun!

My only complaint with this item (besides the dolls' impossible-to-keep-on-or-keep-track-of shoes) is the packaging. There's nothing worse than having a child jumping with excitement as you unwind eighteen security twist-ties and bands ... and unwind ... and unwind ... and unwind.

Barbie & Kelly Fun Treats Dolls (2001) Overview

Kids love cooking and Barbie's little sister Kelly is no exception. Here the two of them are fixing some lovely, if understandably tiny, desserts. A cake mix is included and the cakes require no baking. Rainbow sprinkles can be added to decorate the dessert however you, or Barbie, or Kelly, like them. Barbie and Kelly figures are included. There may be some educational value in having Barbie teach her younger sibling how to cook, but mostly this is just a toy for make-believe kitchen fun. --John Moe
